Why New Pope Chose The Name Francis...

Mar 20, 2013 by

When Archbishop of Buenos Aires became a 266th Pope many were asking themselves why a new Pope chose the name Francis. On Saturday, March 16, 2013 while holding his first press conference Argentinian former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in a break, putting aside his written text, recounted the story in-front of over 6,000 journalists and those working in the media. “Some people didn’t know,” he said, “why the Bishop of Rome wanted to call himself ‘Francis’. Some thought of Francis Xavier, Francis de Sales, even Francis of Assisi. I will tell you the story. At the election I had the archbishop emeritus of Sao Paulo next to me. The evening, shortly after he has being elected, Pope Francis dismissed the limousine and went on the last bus with other cardinals. Most cardinals, on the way back from the conclave, took the earlier buses and set themselves to greet the new Pope. Cardinals were expected that Pope Francis would came in the limousine that was waiting for him. But when the last bus came, Pope Francis was one of them who surprisingly came out. But most surprised certainly was the bus-driver when Pope Francis showed up on the bus door. He couldn’t hide questioning surprising look in his eyes. So, Pope Francis told him: “It’s okay, I’m riding with the boys.” During dinner when the cardinals drank to him, beside his modest side Pope Francis showed as well his humorous side too and by raising his glass back, he said: “May God...
